    Dr. Siyang Zheng was awarded $720,000 from the American Cancer Society.
  • Dr. Mary Frecker, professor of mechanical engineering and bioengineering, was named Director of the Bernard M. Gordon Learning Factory. Read more in the Penn State News article "Frecker named new Learning Factory director".
  • Qiming Zhang, professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering, was elected fellow of the American Physical Society for his pioneering work in electroactive polymers in exploiting defect modifications to significantly enhance the performance of materials and in advancing their application for energy conversion and energy storage.
  • Dr. Jian Yang's research group reported in the Materials Research Society for work on a safe bioglue that can quickly stop blood bleeding, heal severe wounds, and control infections. The article "Mussel Compound Adds Muscle to Surgical Bioadhesives" is available in Materials 360 online publication.

    Dr. William Hancock receives NIH grant on Microtubule steering. The four year NIH R01 grant is titled "Kinesin and +TIP-based Microtubule Steering" and is a collaboration with Melissa Rolls in the Penn State biochemistry and molecular biology department, Tom Jackson in the Penn State electrical engineering department, and Erkan Tuzel in the Worcester Polytechnic University physics department.
  • Dr. Justin Brown's research group made the cover of the November 2012 issue of Journal of Biomedical Materials Research. The paper examined the response of bone progenitor cells to nanofibers of varying diameters. The full text and abstract for the article "Nanofiber diameter-dependent MAPK activity in osteoblasts" is available online.
  • Dr. Siyang Zheng received the 2012 NIH Director's New Innovator Award for the project "Integration of Flexible Micro Spring Array and High Throughput Microfluidics for Obtaining Clinical Relevant Information from Circulating Tumor Cells."
  • Dr. Herbert Lipowsky received the 2012 Poiseuille Awards for pioneering contributions to studies of in vivo blood rheology in microcirculation.
