Spring/Summer 2015

Message from the Department Head

description

Welcome!

I am pleased to report that the department of biomedical engineering is currently undergoing a period of rapid growth and development.

Over the next three years, the department will double its current faculty size - filling a total of 12 new positions. The positions will include a majority of joint appointments in the College of Engineering, College of Medicine, Eberly College of Science, the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, Materials Research, and the Cancer Institute. Since October 2014, we have already received over 430 faculty applicants to fill the 3-5 positions allocated for 2015. We are humbled by the enthusiasm we have received in this endeavor and are currently hosting interviews and negotiations.

To facilitate the new growth, we have also announced that we will be moving into a new, state-of-the-art teaching and research facility with the chemical engineering department in early 2019! The $150 million dollar project is currently the largest project in Penn State’s capital budget. The space will provide a central location on campus close to the heart of the life sciences, and will allow for new invention, collaboration, and discovery.

More information on both of these topics will be presented at this year’s Biomedical and Bioengineering Alumni Reunion, July 11-12 at Tuessy Mountain and University Park. All B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. graduates are invited to attend. We hope to see many of you there as we celebrate the history of our young department and the prolific
expansion we are about to undertake.

Thank you for being a part of the Penn State Biomedical Engineering family. As always, I look forward to sharing many new and positive developments with you in the future.

Dr. Cheng Dong, distinguished professor of biomedical engineering, biomedical engineering department head
