Understanding Cardiovascular Device-mediated Thrombosis


Cardiovascular devices continue to be plagued my thrombosis leading to strokes and heart attacks. By designing a computational model that integrates the blood-materials interactions and fluid mechanics, we seek to design the next generation of cardiovascular devices. However, this computational model needs to be validated experimentally. One aspect of this validation is to understand the permeability and porosity of thrombosis based on materials interactions and fluid mechanics.

Student Role

Experimental and computational models each have distinct constraints and the student will go through the process of finding the intersection of the models. Developing the experimental set-up and models will provide the student the opportunity to exercise the steps of the creative process while advancing the science of the project and understanding of complex fluid and thrombolytic systems.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering administers the undergraduate major in biomedical engineering, and is a part of the university-wide Intercollege Graduate Degree Program, offering both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Bioengineering. Our work combines traditional engineering principles with medicine and technology for the betterment of human health and society.
