Manning awarded PSEAS Outstanding Advising Award

04/21/2016

Keefe Manning, associate professor of biomedical engineering, has been named a recipient of the 2016 Penn State Engineering Alumni Society’s Outstanding Advising Award.

The award recognizes and rewards outstanding advisers of engineering undergraduate and graduate students.

It was established to recognize the importance of advising in the total engineering education program.

Eligible recipients must have completed at least three years of service within the College of Engineering, and regularly served as a teacher and adviser of students.

Recipients are nominated for their guidance, assistance, motivation and inspiration to students in a manner that substantially exceeds the normal expectation for a faculty member.

A Penn State faculty member since 2004, Manning directs the Artificial Heart and Cardiovascular Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at University Park, where he oversees both graduate and undergraduate students.  He has also served as an adviser for the Biomechanics Option students since 2005 and has served as a Schreyer Honors Scholar adviser for BME students since 2011.

He is a member of the International Society of Biorheology; the American Heart Association; Biomedical Engineering Society; the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, where he has served as Chair of the Fluids Committee for the Bioengineering Division since 2015..

Recently, as the primary investigator on two grants, Manning was awarded funding from the National Science Foundation and the American Heart Association to initiate two new summer research programs for undergraduate students. The first cohort of students participating in the programs are set to begin their research in May 2016.

Manning will be formally recognized and presented with the Outstanding Advising Award during a reception on April 27 at the Nittany Lion Inn.
