UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Ph.D. candidates Qiyao Li, Dingying Shan and Chuying Ma received awards, under the direction of Jian Yang, professor of biomedical engineering, for their research at the American Chemical Society’s 254th national meeting held in Washington, D.C.

Li placed in the Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) division for best poster award, chosen out of more than 200 other entrants. Her winning research was, “Development of Phosphate-Presenting Citrate-Based Polymers for Orthopaedic Applications.”

Both Shan and Ma received accolades at the Chinese Association for Biomaterials Young Investigator Merit Awards (CAB-YM) for their presentation at the Symposium of Biomaterials Science and Translational Medicine of the ACS meeting. Their winning research included Shan’s, “Flexible Biodegradable Citrate-Based Polymeric Step-Index Optical Fiber” and Ma’s, “Biomimetic Biodegradable Photoluminescent Polymers for Bone Tissue Engineering.”

The Symposium was held under the Division of Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering of ACS and was co-sponsored by the Chinese Association of Biomaterials (CAB) and Bioactive Materials Journal.
